Woods Landing-Jelm, Wyoming – Day 3 (Overnight)

Our next destination was Woods Landing-Jelm, Wyoming. We arrived at Woods Landing Resort, and it was my son’s first time staying in a cabin, staying on a river, and doing a little off-roading on the way to dinner. We were lucky that there was not much snow; we got a light dusting on our way in.

Woods Landing-Jelm is located just outside of Laramie, Wyoming. It is considered a census-designated place or a settlement, having a population of 97 in 2010. Woods Landing Resort was built as a saloon by Colonel Samuel Woods. In 1927 it was bought and became a gas station and a sandwich stand, now the General Country Store.

In 1932 they started adding cabins and a dancehall for people vacationing in the area. The dancehall features 1 of only 4 remaining floors equipped with boxcar springs to add bounce and flexibility in the United States.

These days, during the warmer seasons, they have a restaurant, a bar, and the dancehall operating.

We ventured out for dinner at Bear Bottom Bar and Grill; my child said he had the best veggie burger he ever had. They are located in Centennial, Wyoming, about 30 mins from our cabin via a mountainside dirt road.

Centennial, Wyoming, is home to 300 residents and is considered the gateway to the Snowy Range Mountains. It was founded in … to support the railroad and timber industries. Originally home to Cheyenne, Arapaho, Ute, and Lakota tribes, French traders began exploring the region in the 1740s. Settlers and camps started forming in 1986 to support the building of the Union Pacific Railroad with lumber.

Ranchers started claiming land with the Homestead Act of 1862, and the local gold mine, Centennial Mine, bolstered settlements even more after being discovered in 1875.
