Our first stop along the way for lunch and a walk was in Antonio, CO, at Caboose Burgers!
Antonio is a small town in the San Luis Valley that was incorporated in 1889 and started out as a sheep herding camp named San Antonio Junction. After the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad built a line going south from Alamosa, the town was renamed to Antonio. Although Antonio no longer has industries using the rails, they are still being used by the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Colorado Pacific Rio Grande Railroad.
We ended up in Antonio from US Highway 258, which was recently rebuilt in 2015, and found ourselves at Caboose Burgers, which offers comfort foods, beverages, and desserts. We were lucky enough to get a tour of the building’s old bank vault that was placed in 1909; the building was actually built around it! The food was delicious and plentiful, their lemonades were perfectly flavored, and the sherbet was heavenly. Our server was very accommodating and helpful and made spot-on recommendations. He allowed us to view the old vault, check out its service records, and hold old safety deposit boxes.
I found out later that scenes from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade were filmed there at a current Indiana Jones Bed and Breakfast and the train scene just outside of Caboose Burgers!
We ate and walked around Main Street, the park south of Caboose Burgers, checked out the library, and hopped back into the car! Our next stop: Crestone, Colorado!
